The Sign

On the corner of Division and Legion Streets, Whitehall, Montana

"Who would want just a corner on the truth when you have ALL the truth in Christ Jesus?"

"Far from being rivals or enemies, religion and law are twin sisters, friends, and mutual assistants. Indeed, these two sciences run into each other. The divine law, as discovered by reason and the moral sense, forms an essential part of both."

James Wilson
Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence
Born in Scotland

"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader."

Samuel Adams, letter to James Warren
February 12, 1779

No Fluff and Feel Good Here - Just Truth Nuggets...Zingers you might say.

The sign at the Education Station has been speaking to travelers and townspeople for quite a few years now. We have quoted famous people, mocked cultural sacred cows, and asked some difficult questions. Response has been everything from "Atta Boy" to "There outta be a law". We've been egged, stickered and spat upon. We appreciate the positive feedback and consider the overall mild and well behaved criticism to be a testimony to the congenial spirit of our neighbors.

We hear a lot about the use of our sign, some positive, some negative. Things like:

  • "What on earth are you people trying to do with that sign?
  • "Why can't you put something up there that is not offensive?"
  • "Why doesn't somebody DO something about this? *!@!# aargh!"

Hopefully we can answer some questions here about our "street corner preacher"

Our society and culture is in rank rebellion against Almighty God. We are not primarily talking here of the personal sins of individual people (although we are not excluding these) but we are speaking of the rejection of God himself in apostasy and rebellion that has been institutionalized, that is; made a part of our official legal and political philosophy. Institutional rebellion is represented by such things as the teaching of false religion (Humanism) in the schools and legitimizing and legalizing behavior that God condemns (abortion and homosexuality). Institutional rebellion does not of course take place apart from the sinful desires, thoughts, attitudes and actions of individuals.

As a people that once were free and prosperous we are now taxed and regulated (enslaved) in every conceivable area of our lives. Granted, this form of slavery or servitude is not as cruel perhaps as other forms that history has shown us, but we would explain this by the fact that we are still enjoying some of the remnants of our past Christian political and legal heritage. As that continues to erode (or be discarded) we will see less and less true political freedom or economic prosperity. Political liberty and economic prosperity are the results of God's faithful covenantal blessing for faithful obedience by his covenant people.

We have political and theological "liberals" and "conservatives" squared off against each other, each offering us their concepts of reality and visions of Utopia. All the while they both pass more laws and collect more taxes. All the while our once glorious Christian culture disintegrates. Are there others that don't trust the promises of either? Is there a better way?

Oh....Here are the short answers to the above questions from the locals.

  1. Get people to think.
  2. People are often offended when you make them think.
  3. The First Amendment
